Interlinking gets traffic – here’s the why and how:

What’s interlinking anyway?

Interlinking is the process of connecting your website’s pages together – effectively making your own mini internet.

What you’re doing is mirroring the big wide search-engine world, which means your site becomes very welcoming to the indexing spiders – just what you want.

If each page of your site is connected, it’s easy for them all to be indexed.

Interlinking will help get you pageviews. This is a term that means the number of pages, not posts, a visitor sees. If you can create a sequence of reading, like a pathway, your reader will be inclined to stay longer. That means they’ll have more exposure to your ideas and opinions – and your advertisements.

Why do you need each page indexed?

It’s because of the way Google works, and because Google is the biggest, that’s what you pay attention. Linking each page to each other pulls up your page rank, gaining you more traffic.

If you just consider which article would be relevant to the one you’re writing, and do little more than link to it, you’ve increased the usability of visibility of your site.  You can go further, however, and use keywords in your links.

What are your keywords?

Your links (the underlined highlighted text you’re using to attract attention to something else), are ideally keyword rich.  That is, they should include the phrases or words people type in when they search.

If your website is about the latest trends in mobile phones, say, one of your foundation articles is likely to be about how to achieve maximum battery life. This is potentially of interest to every reader. And you could link to it in most posts about new phones.

Maximum mobile phone battery life, and variations, is one of your keywords.

Using keywords in your links.

People wanting information about mobile phone battery life are likely to search for some variation of the words ‘mobile phone battery’ – so those are the words to put in your links – with variations so your links aren’t all the same.

This gives you some precedence in search results – and more traffic.

How foundation articles increase your traffic:

Your foundation articles are the ones your whole blog or website hangs on. These articles are the ones that discuss the key topics in your niche; need to know information that you’ll have written about in depth – or should.

That’s because this is what people want to know – and internal links from your posts to articles on foundation topics will be followed. This increases your visitor satisfaction, and the likelihood of repeat visits, as they get more questions answered.

So ensure your foundation article cover your niche’s most pressing questions – and link to them often with your keyword phrases.  Have fun interlinking!
